The purpose of a pool cartridge filter is to clean your pool water by capturing debris and contaminants in the folds of the filter. With time these folds will become clogged, water will not flow thru the filter as easily, and pressure within the filter will increase. Operationally, with water flow down, you will not be turning you pool water as frequently and your pool contaminants will start to build up. It's time to clean your filter. As a general rule of thumb, your filter should be cleaned at least once a month during the summer and every other month if your pool is operational during the winter. This guide shows you how to replace multiple cartridges in a large Jandy CL580 Cartridge Filter. Although this guide is specific to the Jandy CL580 Cartridge Filter, many steps are common to other models of large cartridge filters.
Step 1
TURN OFF PUMP - The first step is to turn off the pool pump to stop the flow of water through the pool filter.
Step 2
RELIEVE PRESSURE - Next you will have to relieve the pressure that has built up in the pool filter. Note the pressure on the pressure gauge. It will typically read between 15 - 20 psi. To relieve pressure turn the air relief valve on top of the filter counter clockwise. Water will spray out initially as you see the pressure on the pressure gauge go to 0 psi.
Step 3
OPEN WASTE LINE - Open the Ball Valve on the Filter Waste Line to drain the water from the bottom of the filter.
Step 4
REMOVE CLAMP BOLT - The Upper and Lower sections of the Filter Tank are held together by a Clamp Ring which is secured with a Bolt. Remove this Bolt from the Clamp.
Step 5
OPEN CLAMP - The Clamp is hinged on the back side. Open the Clamp and take it off the Tank. If the Clamp is stuck, tap it gently with a rubber mallet.
Step 6
REMOVE CLAMP - Lift the Clamp off the Filter Tank.
Step 7
LIFT OFF UPPER TANK SECTION - The Upper Tank Section should lift straight up from the Lower Tank Section. You may have to hit the top side of the Upper Tank gently to break the O-ring seal between the two sections.

VIEW CARTRIDGES - This is what the four cartridges look like with the Upper Tank Section off. Note the white Top Spacer on top of the Manifold Assembly.

LIFT OFF MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY - Lift the Manifold Assembly off the top of the four cartridges. Make sure the Top Spacer does not slip off.
Step 10
CLEAN MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY - Wash down the manifold Assembly. Spray water down the Breather Tube to make sure it is clear of debris.

LIFT OUT CARTRIDGES - Lift each of the four cartridges straight up out of the Lower Tank Section.
Step 12
CLEAN CARTRIDGES - Clean each of the four cartridges starting at the top and working the dirt and debris down and out of the bottom.

VIEW CARTRIDGES - Note the difference between the clean and dirty cartridges shown in the picture.
Step 14
WASH OUT LOWER TANK - Spray out the inside of the Lower Tank Section to remove any debris collected in the bottom. Dirty water should wash out through the Tank Waste Line.
Step 15
CLOSE WASTE LINE - Close the Ball Valve on the Filter Waste Line.
Step 16
VIEW CARTRIDGE SUPPORT - This picture shows the four stations in the lower Cartridge Support that are used to line up the bottoms of the cartridges.

REPLACE CARTRIDGES - Place each of the four Cartridges back into the Lower Tank Section.
Step 18
REPLACE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY - Replace the Manifold Assembly into the tops of the four cartridges. Check that the Top Spacer is in place.
Step 19
CHECK TANK O-RING - Check the Tank O-Ring for cracks and wear and replace it if required. Lightly lubricate the O-Ring with a silicon based lubricant.
Step 20
REPLACE UPPER TANK SECTION - Replace the Upper Tank Section over the Lower section. Position the Top so that you can read the Pressure Gauge.

REPLACE CLAMP - Replace the Clamp over the lips of the two Tank Sections.
Step 22
REPLACE CLAMP BOLT - Replace the Clamp Bolt and tighten it. To make sure the Clamp seats properly, gently tap all around the outside edge of the Clamp with a rubber mallet as you are tightening the Bolt.
Step 23
TURN ON PUMP - Turn on power to the pool pump to re-pressurize the pool filter.
Step 24
CLOSE RELIEF VALVE - The air relief valve should still be open. As the pressure builds, air will be released through the relief valve. When water starts to spray out of the valve, turn the valve clockwise to close it.
Step 25
CHECK PRESSURE GAUGE - Check the pressure gauge. As the pressure comes up, it will typically reads between 10 - 15 psi but this will vary according to the make of pool cartridge filter or its age. This value is your system's clean filter pressure. When the pressure is 8-10 psi higher, it's time to clean your pool filter again.
